Johannesburg

Journey to the old inner-city of Johannesburg where the early mining "Randlords" established their mining houses, many early Johannesburg buildings survive and have important historical connections.

The inner city remains the home of most of the major banks and the Gauteng Provincial government and a number of regeneration projects are underway. Newtown is an important initiative to create a vibrant cultural centre with new housing and commercial components. See the new Nelson Mandela bridge which now makes this area very accessible.

Visit the site where the main gold reef was discovered in 1886 and view an original shaft and the exposed reef as well as an early crushing mill.

The only city in the world not on a natural water supply.  It is a bit ironically as Johannesburg used to be an inland lake.  The floor of the lake was so heavy that it tilted.  This caused the Golden Arc, which runs from Evander to Welkom, and stretches about 500km.  This is the arc on which most of the gold mines are found.  Johannesburg City only really started when the first claim was registered by George Harrison in 1886.  The town developed very fast from there.
